Invisible Beauty, Bethann Hardison, Frédéric Tcheng (2022, United States)
More than just a pretty face: revolutionary fashion pioneer, model and activist Bethann Hardison looks back on her career and sheds light on a little-known chapter in the fight for racial diversity.
November 1973, Palace of Versailles, more than a historic building, a symbol of French opulence. A charity gala pits French and American designers, that is, haute couture royalty against the brazen audacity of the New World. Of the 36 models the United States invited to walk the runway, 10 were black, an unprecedented number in the industry. Among them was Bethann Hardison. The parade was an instant success, and Hardison felt that a crack of light had slipped through a stone system. This is a self-portrait of a fashion maverick, who believes in the strength of community and refuses to forget the historical traces of black women. The Brooklyn-based activist teams up with Frédéric Tcheng to co-direct an exciting and energizing documentary that chronicles—alongside Robin Givhan, Naomi Campbell, and Iman—her legendary career as model and its efforts to combat discrimination in the sector.
Film is screened in original version with Catalan subtitles.
