Issey Miyake “Twelve Black Girls” Show 1976

Produced by Bethann Hardison

“Issey Miyake and Twelve Black Girls” was a month-long presentation of Miyake’s Spring/Summer 1976 collection at the Seibu Theater in Tokyo and the Osaka Municipal Gymnasium. At the time, having just one black model in a runway show was rare and still considered taboo but Bethann Hardison helped Issey Miyake produce what seemed to be daring and nearly impossible. Seen by over 15,000 people, famous faces like Michael Douglas and Jack Nicholson were spotted among the show’s front row attendees. In Grace Jones’ memoir, she recalls, “Issey wanted his shows to be more than just fashion, a mundane display of clothes—he wanted theater, scandal, a different kind of event beyond fashion, beyond show business, pure experience, always with an undercurrent of imaginative strength. Even then he was breaking free of the idea of what a model was, and of convention ideals of beauty.”
